JOB DEFINITION:

The Learning & Development Specialist is responsible for the design and implementation of internal training and development opportunities at DESC. Our goal is to create learning experiences that are relevant and compelling to the needs of the organization and its employees, making DESC an organization where staff are excited to learn skills, grow in their careers, and deliver on DESC’s mission. This position is responsible for all aspects of our online Learning Management System and New Employee Onboarding program. The Specialist will be someone who is organized, a great communicator, high-energy, and is up for the challenge of serving a large and complex organization. This position is a part of the training team and reports to the Senior Manager of Learning and Development.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage and administer our online Learning Management System (LMS), including user accounts, customizing the platform for our needs, and being the point of contact with the software company to providing technical support.
  • Within the LMS, develop and oversee staff learning plans that are tailored for each department, program, or position, in collaboration with department leaders.
  • Build out a robust learning library of resources and a “tagging” system to help staff find what they need.
  • Manage all aspects of the New Employee Orientation program, including coordination of volunteer trainers and subject matter experts, updating both online and instructor-led curriculum as needed, venues for in-person trainings, and assist with logistical support.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to develop, adapt, and improve new employee orientation courses, in keeping with best practices in employee onboarding.
  • Create curriculum for trainings and workshops, using digital tools to create flexible programs that include virtual instructor-led, and web-based on-demand courses in addition to in-person opportunities.
  • Deliver trainings, both virtual and instructor-led.
  • Working with the training department, help drive a culture of continuous professional development.
  • Other training-related responsibilities as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to design and deliver engaging and effective presentations, workshops, forums, and other learning experiences. Familiarity with best practices in adult education a plus.
  • Comfortable with public speaking, directing large groups and being an agency representative to new staff and community partners.
  • Demonstrated success in managing multiple projects, with the ability to organize and coordinate work efficiently, prioritize workload, adapt to changing priorities, and adhere to deadlines.
  • Understanding of and commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. Ability to apply an equity lens to all aspects of training and development including training content (on racism, homophobia, sexism, disability, and the like), delivery methods, and in building a diverse team of staff trainers.
  • Strong computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheets and databases, Publisher and PowerPoint, and experience with online learning.
  • Excellent interpersonal, teamwork and diplomacy skills. Flexibility and willingness to work collaboratively with multiple staff to accomplish responsibilities.
  • 2 years of experience with related skills such as being a trainer, facilitator, presenter, developing curriculum, or managing projects and programs.
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds (Moving training supplies in and out of venues, setting up and taking down tables and chairs).
  • An ability to work flexible hours as necessary, primarily early mornings on training days, occasional evenings, and very infrequently weekends.
  • Candidate selected for this position must pass a criminal history background check prior to employment.
  • A personal vehicle is not a requirement of this position, however using an agency-owned vehicle is a must. The successful candidate must possess and maintain a valid Washington State Driver’s License, the appropriate amount of automobile insurance, and a safe driving record.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Past experience as a training coordinator or other staff development role.
  • Experience with Learning Management Systems, web-based learning platforms, and course-authoring software.
  • Degree or certificate in learning and development, education, curriculum and instruction, organizational development, nonprofit leadership, human resources development or related field, and/or work experience in one of these fields.
  • Any other combination of skills and experience that give you the ability to do the job.

JOB LOCATION: This position is partially remote and partially on-site at least through the pandemic. Remote staff are required to maintain an effective remote work space with reliable high-speed internet connection. Staff will be provided with an agency-issued computer and associated equipment.
